i left you hanging the other day with news about the starting defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers. so here’s what’s up.
Brett Keisel and his wife, Sarah, will be meeting up with RunTellmanRun at The Hub, a homeless youth outreach center smack dab in the middle of Pittsburgh. Brett “The Diesel” Keisel is pretty much the man. he’s won two Superbowls as part of one of the fiercest defenses in the NFL.
Brett’s no stranger to charity work, which is another reason i already love this guy. he holds a chair position with the Homeless Children’s Education Fund based here in P-burgh.
it’s obvious that Brett is respected and almost revered in this city, so he’s going to be a great help in shining a spotlight on the problem of youth homelessness. and from what i hear, his wife plays just as big a role in their community work.
we’re both going to sign a football, which will be auctioned off to raise money for The Hub (keep an eye for that). and of course, we’re going to meet the residents and learn their stories, and see what they need to succeed in life.
The Hub is a “frontline” type of outreach center. it has street teams that actually find and recruit homeless youth on the street. The Hub gives them a place to sleep, eat and shower, then offers them immediate services like counseling and crisis intervention. aftercare and links to services like permanent housing, jobs or job training, health care and legal services are also arranged.
can’t wait to meet Brett and Sarah and the residents. it’s going to be a fun day.
in other news, the weather has been pretty nasty in Pennsylvania the last 3 days. State College, where we were just last week, got 7″ of snow — their earliest snowfall on record. we haven’t seen any white stuff here in Pittsburgh, but cold wet roads have kept me in this hotel room since Thursday. the good news is that things should clear up tomorrow. might get a half day in, but more likely we’ll get back at it on monday.
