Remember Ben?
He’s my best friend… we grew up together in New Hampshire. He was also my right hand man on the road, my go-to guy, my brutha from another mutha. The dude is tough as nails, and sometimes it seems like he was born for life on the road. But did you know that Ben has a softer side (almost literally)?
Ben knits. And now that we’re back home in Vermont for a few months, he pretty much spends all his spare time at Knit or Dye, a knitting supply and instructional store downtown. If you’re wondering if he’s usually the only large, bearded man in a knitting store, the answer is yes. He’s usually the only dude, period. But that’s just fine with Ben. Give him a skein of Brown Sheep yarn and a set of needles and he’s happy.
Out on the road, Ben knit Luke a fine wool hat. It was blue with a black band I believe. It looked stupendous. And from what I understand, he’s about to teach a class of ladies at Knit or Dye how to make a felted clutch.
Right now, Ben’s working on a very warm-looking, super chunky sweater made of gray Brown Sheep wool.
So anyway, there’s your update on Ben, and what he’s up to these days.
And speaking of warm, knit things… we got a note on the blog from David Bowland the other day. He pointed out that for $4 you can get good quality winter socks with 40% wool at a place like Wal-Mart. That means that 100 people donating $4 could provide
warm socks for 100 kids on the street. Head to http://www.runtellmanrun.com/donate right now, before you break for lunch and forget, and give $4. A plain ‘ol pair of warm socks is something every man, woman and child in America deserves.

Hey! Tellman, Hey Luke, Hey Sarah! Great happenings you guys–you all ROCK! This is ZwhocanSee–and I wanna be one of Tell’s Angels! Contact me about that:) I just LOVE men who knit– right ON Ben! Warm socks make all the dif! I’m in the high desert–just 35 miles north of Santa Monica CA–but at 3000 ft elevation it gets COLD here. We even get snow:) So I KNOW warm socks are a good thing–so are LAYERS–I’m wearing 3 today! Some folks are so financially challenged right now that even a few bucks are hard to find–but they DO have clothes in fine shape–gift-sweaters to regift, sweats that came too small or large, thermals they don’t need, WARM clothes. Strikes me that you’ve raised such great awareness and momentum across the country–you can USE this blog, get some people who could be drop-off points and other people to DELIVER the warm clothes to youth centers you’ve already connected with across the country! That way–people who just don’t have even a few spare bucks (harsh reality of today) but do have CLOTHES they could spare could get involved and help too!
